Intent
To minimize heat island and extreme heat impacts on microclimates and habitats and improve thermal
comfort, air quality, and energy efficiency for a healthier and more livable city.

Comply with any of the following options for a maximum of 2 points.
Option 1. City-Wide Heat Island Reduction (2 points)
PATH 1. PERFORMANCE PATHWAY (2 POINTS):
Demonstrate at least 5% improvement in one of the following the city-wide heat island reduction
strategies in the reporting year from a user-defined baseline year. The selected baseline year
must fall within the last five years. Use any of the following strategies to show improvement:
a. Increased tree canopy cover within the city
b. Increased natural resource acreage within the city
c. Reduction in surface and/or air temperature of the city
d. Increase in the albedo mapping of the city
Natural resource areas include, but are not limited to, undeveloped and uninhabited topographic
features, soils, terrestrial vegetation, terrestrial habitat, hydrology, and aquatic ecosystems as
identified in IPp1: Ecosystem Assessment . Green spaces as defined in NBc5: Accessible and
Inclusive Open Spaces can be included within the natural resource area calculation.
