PATH 2. PRESCRIPTIVE PATHWAY (1–2 POINTS)

Use a combination of heat island mitigating strategies for shading, roofing, and surface materials

listed below to reduce heat island in city infrastructure and city-operated public spaces. Points are

awarded per Table 1.

Shading Materials

a. Shading materials with an aged solar reflectance index (SRI) of at least 32 (if aged value

information is not available, use materials with an initial SRI of at least 39).

b. Structures covered by energy-generation systems, such as solar thermal collectors,

photovoltaics, wind turbines, and vegetated structures.

c. Architectural devices or structures. All roofs with an aged solar reflectance (SR) value of

at least 0.28 as measured in accordance with ANSI/CRRC S100, and for other structures

and cases where aged SR information is not available have an initial SR of at least 0.33

as measured in accordance with ANSI/CRRC S100 .

d. Shade over pavement areas measured in plain view at noon with existing or new

native/adapted plants, assuming 10-year canopy.

Roofing Materials

a. Green roofs using native or adapted plant species.

b. High-reflectance roofing materials that have an aged SRI value equal to or greater than

64 for a low-sloped roof and 32 for a steep-sloped roof as measured in accordance with

ANSI/CRRC S100 . If aged SRI is not available, have an initial SRI value equal to or

greater than 82 for a low-sloped roof and 39 for a steep-sloped roof as measured in

accordance with ANSI/CRRC S100 .

Surface Materials

a. Paving materials with an initial SR value of at least 0.33.

b. An open-grid pavement system (at least 50% unbound).
