Acoustics Projects located within 0.25 miles (400 meters) of a significant noise source must incorporate design elements that enhance the soundscape and address unwanted or disruptive sounds that negatively impact building occupants’ comfort, health, or productivity. A significant noise source is any noise-generating entity or activity that consistently produces sound levels above recognized comfort or safety thresholds according to local regulations. These soundscape enhancements may include sound barriers, strategically positioned vegetation, and water features such as fountains, all designed to mitigate noise pollution. Their effectiveness can be evaluated through metrics such as interior noise levels, Noise Reduction Coefficients (NRC), and Sound Transmission Class (STC) ratings. By dampening external noise, these features contribute to a more pleasant and acoustically balanced environment, which enhances comfort and well-being for building users.
